CAGGNI (Computer Assisted Genealogy Group Northern Illinois) has special interest groups for genealogy software users that can help with your quandaries. These groups allow users to share their experiences and learn new tips and tricks about the software.
The Family Tree Maker Special Interest Group meets this Saturday, April 12 from 12:45-2:30 PM. The Master Genealogist User Group will meet on Saturday, May 14 from 10:30-12:30 and the Reunion Special Interest Group won't be meeting again until August 13. All meetings are held at the Schaumburg Public Library.
CAGGNI offers lots of other great programming about technology throughout the year too. Follow their website for updates. And don't miss their annual conference: GeneaQuest on Saturday, June 18.

Jewish American Heritage Month

If you're researching your Jewish ancestry, you'll want to visit the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois in Northbrook. The have a research library with over 800 volumes on Jewish genealogy and host programs once a month. JGSI also maintains a searchable Online Death Index, a database of death records from local cemeteries.
Another great local resource is the Guide to Jewish Genealogy in Chicagoland by Mike Karsen.

Irish Genealogical Research Society
The Irish Genealogical Research Society has launched a monthly e-bulletin containing news about resources and developments in Irish genealogy.
Although the new e-bulletin is intended to be exclusive to the Society's membership, the first edition only is being made available on a limited wider scale until the end of February. Request a copy by sending an email to IGRSOC2011@hotmail.co.uk with 'IGRS Bulletin 1/12' in the subject line.
Member benefits include a newsletter, an annual scholarly journal, and free access to a large collection of Irish genealogy material. The Society's website also offers a changing online programme of member-only access to a selection of manuscript materials.

Civil War Surgeons
The November Meeting of CAGGNI (Computer Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois) will be a special presentation: The Search for Civil War Surgeons: A Personal Quest by Dr Trevor Steinbach.
This Meeting will be at Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 500 North Dunton Avenue, in Arlington Heights. There will be no meeting in December. The 2012 schedule will resume at Schaumburg Library.
Dr. Trevor Steinbach is not only a Civil War Medical Reenactor but has done extensive research on all four of the people that he portrays. His quest to research Dr. C.A. Bucher from his home town Batavia has taken over 10 years. The processes that he used and the data that he uncovered while research 4 Civil War Surgeons will both entertain and provide the audience with new resources.
Dr. Steinbach has been portraying Civil War medical officers since the early 1990’s. His current personas include Dr. James R.M. Gaskill from 17th Corps Field Hospital and Dr. Urban G. Owen from the Army of Tennessee Field Hospital. He has written a monthly column on Civil War Medicine for the Civil War Courier Magazine since 2003. He is a board member of the Society of Civil War Surgeons, the national organization for medical reenactors.

PERSI
The July monthly meeting of CAGGNI (Computer-Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois) features a presentation on PERSI (PERiodical Source Index), a widely-used subject index relating to genealogy and local history periodicals dating back to the early 1800's. There are 1.7 million searchable records in 6000 different periodicals.

Norwegian Genealogy
Caron Primas Brennan will present Uff Da! Researching My Norwegian Roots at the next meeting of the Northwest Suburban Council of Genealogists.

Caron will share what she has learned through researching her own elusive Norwegian great-grandparents and discovering her cousins in Scandinavia. She will discuss research locations and guides, lessons learned, and other helpful hints.

She has been researching her family history since a 6th grade school project piqued her curiosity. Caron primarily uses The Master Genealogist as well as Family Tree Maker software and Ancestry.com to share her passion with others in her family. She is currently the Webmaster and Newsletter Publisher for Computer Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois.

The Computer Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois (CAGGNI) meeting will take place at 10:30 Sat. Aug. 21, 2010, at the Schaumburg Township District Library, on the SW corner of Roselle and Schaumburg Roads, next to Dominick's.
Mike Karsen will present Liven Up your Family History with Images. While family histories contain phenomenal research with every event documented and sourced with precision, few persons are interested in reading them. Images are needed to bring grandparents and great grandparents to life. Mike's presentation shows how to liven up your family history with images of people, places, and events to keep readers turning pages.
